Pennsylvania Personal Income Tax Credit (EITC)

PA Personal Income Tax Credit

Do you want to support the students of The Circle School by making a donation? If you live in Pennsylvania, it’s easier than you think!

Did you know that each year The Circle School awards more than $270,000 in need-based financial aid to increase access to self-directed education? We believe that our little democratic school is not just for the privileged elite, and we’re proud that our student body reflects the income profile of the Central Pennsylvania region we serve. We’re grateful for the individuals and businesses who give, but we need more help to close the gap.

Through Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program, contributions to an approved scholarship organization can qualify for a 90% credit on their Pennsylvania income taxes. In effect, you can choose to redirect your tax dollars to support education so that families can access the educational model that is best for their children, regardless of their economic status. The Circle School has partnered with PennGift Foundation to make the donation process simple and supported.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to participating in the Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit program:

  1. Look at your 2025 Pennsylvania income tax return and identify what your tax liability was (see line 12). If it was at least $450, you’re probably eligible to participate in the EITC program, assuming there are no significant changes in your income for 2026. Or estimate what your household’s gross income will be for the year 2026 and multiply it by .0307 (the personal income tax rate). Note that if you are eligible for PA’s Tax Forgiveness Program, you may not benefit fully from the EITC tax credit.
  2. Decide how much you want to give. The minimum contribution is $500. In order to maximize your EITC credits, you can give up to 110% of your tax liability.
  3. Complete the PennGift joinder form. Download and print your completed joinder for your records. You will receive a confirmation email within a few minutes of submitting your online joinder form.
  4. When you receive contribution instructions (usually within a week), send your payment to PennGift. Please do NOT send in your contribution until you have received your contribution instructions, or the processing of your contribution could be delayed. Contributions must be received by December 31, 2026.
  5. In February 2027, you will receive a K-1 form from RKL, the accounting firm that manages the tax documents for PennGift. When you file your PA taxes, include the PA RK-1 and Schedule OC (Other Credits).
  6. You will receive your tax credits as a refund sometime between May and September 2027, depending on the PA Department of Revenue’s processing speed. Bonus tip: set it aside to give for your 2027 EITC contribution!
